Notes - Janet Stewart was born in 1688 presumably at Arrachiemore, Buchanan, Stirlingshire, Scotland, and is believed to be the daughter of John Stewart and Janet McInstalker. There were only four Stewart households in the vicinity of Arrachie at the time of Janet's birth headed by three brothers named John, Robert, and Alexander, and their brother-in-law, Ludovick. Onomastics suggests that Janet is most likely the daughter of John Stewart or possibly Robert Stewart. As Robert's family is believed to have departed the area, she is a better fit as a daughter of John.
Janet Stewart married to Patrick McFarlane, likely sometime around 1710-1712, given her age, although no record of their marriage has been found.
In an entry in the Buchanan Kirk Session minutes from Sept 1721, Janet Stewart (identified as 33 years old), spouse of Patrick McFarlane (identified as 30 years old), was called upon to give testimony in the charge of fornication against Robert McFarlane and Margaret McKeller, wife of Donald McIntyre. Janet is described as being about thirty-three years of age. Also called to give testimony was a different Patrick McFarlane, who is described as being about thirty years of age and unmarried.
