Some descendants of George Stewart, born 18 Apr 1767 in Mauchline, Ayrshire, Scotland, son of Archibald Stewart and Agnes Campbell (allegedly married in Glasgow) claim this Archibald Stewart to be the father of said George. Documentary evidence and circumstantial evidence do not support that claim. It would be contrary to typical migratory patterns of the mid-18th century to suggest that a family from Drymen parish might move to Mauchline in Ayrshire. Furthermore, George Stewart has been shown by Y-DNA evidence to be a descendant of the Stewarts of Ardgowan and Blackhall who are not known to have had any documented descendant lines in the vicinity of Drymen parish. Mauchline is significantly closer in geographical proximity to Ardgowan than it is to Blarnavaid. Proximity also suggests that it is far more likely that a Stewart family in Blarnavaid would descend from a family on nearby Loch Lomond rather than from the much more distant Ardgowan. Thus, documentary evidence, DNA evidence, and proximity all make it far more likely that Archibald Stewart in Mauchline descends from a local Stewart family in Ayrhire and not from the Stewarts in Blarnavaid.
