- George Buchanan, husband of Isabel Nobel, and father of the four daughters shown here, is suspected, but not confirmed to be George Buchanan, younger son of George Buchanan, 3rd of Auchmar. They are the same age and in the same location and his daughter married a descendant of the Stewarts of Coillemore. George Buchanan, younger of Auchmar's nephew also married a Stewart of Coillemore. George Buchanan's mother was a Stewart of Blairgarry. The Stewarts of Blairgarry and Coillemore were both senior cadet branches of the Stewarts of Gartnafuaran.
Buchanan of Auchmar's History says the following about George Buchanan, son of George Buchanan, 3rd of Auchmar: "George Buchanan had one son William, who married at London and left a son, James, who in 1723 was a merchant in London." (Auchmar, p. 191. as quoted in The Buchanan Book, by Alexander Buchanan)
The phrase "had one son" is open to wide interpretation of meaning. It could mean that George had "only one son" and no other children. It could mean that George had only one son and the rest of his children were daughters. It could mean that George had only one surviving son and the rest of them died young without children of their own. It could mean that George had several sons but only one of them was noteworthy.
George Buchanan is presumed to have married about 1645 to Isabel Nobel, although no record of their marriage has been found. George Buchanan and Isabel Nobel had five documented children, all daughters, between 1648-1662. The Buchanan parish register did not commence recording marriages and baptisms until 1646, so it is possible they could have had earlier children whose baptisms were not recorded. It is also the likely reason why there is no marriage record for them.
No birth record has been found for William, son of George Buchanan, so his mother's name is not known. But it is possible that George Buchanan and Isabel Nobel could have had an unrecorded son, William.
Auchmar does not mention any daughters to George Buchanan, nor does he say that George Buchanan had ONLY one son William and no daughters. It would be unlikely that a man in that era would have only one child, so it is plausible that George Buchanan, husband of Isabel Nobel, is the same George Buchanan who was son of George Buchanan, 3rd of Auchmar.
George was residing at Gartfairn in Buchanan parish, near the Kirkton and just south of Auchmar. The later Buchanan in Gartfairn family is the same family who moved to Glasgow as businesspersons and built Auchmar House in Glasgow, then immigrated to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and built another Auchmar House in Hamilton. They have not been traced any earlier than John Buchanan in Little Croy whose birth has not been found, but he is likely a descendant of an earlier branch of Auchmar. His eldest son was George, so John was likely born
