• Notes

William Stewart is estimated to have been born about 1680 in Gartmore, Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland. William Stewart is believed to be the one identified in the following excerpt from the Appendix to Stewarts of the South: "I forgot to mention another family, which lays claim to the [Ardvorlich] family in the Barony of Drymen in Drymen Parish [in] Stirling County and [on] the Duke of Montrose’s property. There was one John Stewart, Tenant of Tuair, [who] pays £57 of rent, a rich, bein, batchelor. There was a William Stewart, [who was] an uncle of his, who was a tenant near Gartmore, who had six or seven sons all scattered over the country." Janet Stewart was born 22 Jan 1710 in Trinevackkarog ("Middle Third") on the Gartmore estate in Port of Menteith parish, Perthshire, Scotland, as the earliest recorded child of William Stewart and Lillias McNair. Her place of birth ("Trinevackkarog") is taken from a transcription of the Port of Menteith parish register and may not be exactly correct as entries from the early 1700s are difficult to read. It is believed to be "Trineveadhanag" which is believed to derive from the Gaelic "Trean a mheadhanach" which translates to "third of middle field" and is believed to refer to the property known as Middle Third on the Gartmore estate. William Stewart's residence is identified from the following entry: "1729 Oct 28 William Stewart and Lilias McNair in Easter Bolat had a child baptized called Lillias." (Drymen Parish Register) On 6 Apr 1730, William Stewart married secondly in Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland, to Elizabeth Ure. “William Stewart in this parish (Drymen) and Elizabet Ure in Port were booked for proclamation to marriage.” (Drymen Parish Register) “1730 Mar 28 Listed William Stewart in the parish of Drymen & Eliz: Ure in ys parish & after proclamation were married. Aprile 6th 1730” (Port of Menteith Parish Register) In 1732, William Stewart in "East Balat" is listed in the Drymen Parish Communion Examination Roll as having paid £00:06:00. (He is the only William Stewart listed in the Examination Roll for Drymen making it certain that the 1730 marriage to Elizabeth Ure is him.) William Stewart married thirdly in Drymen, Stirlingshire, Scotland, to Mary Yuil/Zuile and to have moved to Bruachmore near Tuair, just south of Gartmore. William Stewart is listed in the Aberfoyle Mortcloth Register on 22 Mar 1772 William Stewart in Lead of Drymen (fee illegible).
