• Notes

John Stewart was born 3 Dec 1773 in Lianach of Glenbuckie, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, as the youngest son of Walter Clachan Stewart and Mary Stewart. John Stewart is identified in Stewarts of the South, Section II, as being the youngest of two surviving sons to Walter Clachan Stewart in Lianach. He is further described as: "John Stewart, brother to James. [He] died in Strathyre [and] left four sons [who are] minors. This John died at Nineveh of Strathyre, a village erected by the late Mr Buchanan of Cambusmore -- a place as bad as Nineveh of Old." (Ninevah was a nickname for Strathyre Village coined in response to the number of ale houses and drinking establishments.) This entry tells us that John Stewart had a family of at least four sons (as the author rarely mentions daughters) and that he died prematurely prior to 1815-1820 when the entry was written. It tells that he died at Strathyre, but that does not mean his family lived at Strathyre. (Two families are found in the Balquhidder parish register that potentially match that description -- neither matches exactly; both were residing in Auchraw/Achra just east of Lochearnhead where other members of this extended family also lived. The other family is John Stewart and Margaret McDonald in Achra who have been identified elsewhere in this database as John Stewart in Wester Achra from the Stewarts of Glenogle.) While baptismal records only identify one son for John Stewart and Margaret McIntyre (the eldest, Walter, named after his paternal grandfather), census records and death records allow us to identify two additional sons, Donald and John, whose baptism records have not survived. One additional son must be missing if Stewarts of the South account of four sons is correct. John Stewart married on 9 Dec 1803 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, to Margaret McIntyre. They had four known children and at least one additional undocumented son. According to Stewarts of the South, John Stewart died prior to the writing of that document sometime around 1815-1820. --- The other matching family is below. However this family has been identified as belonging to John Stewart in Wester Achra. John Stewart and Margaret McDonald in Achra and Glenogle. Married 03 AUG 1793 in Balquhidder. 1. 1794, Augst 11th, John Stewart and McDonald his spouse in ___ had a child baptd and named ___. 2. 1796, January 3d, John Stewart and Mary McDonald in Wester Achra had a child baptized and named Janet. 3. 1797 March 26, John Stewart and Margaret McDonald in Achra had a daughter baptd and named Margaret. 4. 1799 April 14th, John Stewart and Margaret McDonald in Wester Achra had a child baptd and named Patric. 5. 1801 Octr 21st, John Stewart and wife Margt McDonald Achra had a son bapd and named James. 6. 1803 Octr 30, John Stewart and spouse Margaret McDonald Achra had a son bapd named John. 7. 1806 March 16, John Stewart and spouse Margaret McDonald Achra had a child bapd and named Duncan. 8. 1808 March 20, John Stewart and Margaret McDonald spouse Achra had a child baptd and named Agnes. 9. 1810 November 18th, John Stewart and Margaret McDonald Wester Achra had a child baptized and named Helen. 10.
