- 1901 census shows him living with Annie Cuthbert, who was born 14 May 1877. They are lodging in the house of Rebecca Smith in Neepawa Township, MacDonald District, Manitoba. They have no children in 1901. It has now been concluded that the "Annie" shown in the census must be an enumerator's error as this is clearly Ella Wortman.
Hugh and Ella had no children.
From the Mantioba Morning Free Press, Winnipeg, Friday, December 28, 1900, under Matrimonial,
"A very attractive and quiet wedding took place at the residence of W. W. Wortman, 35 Gunnell street, on Wednesday evening, when Mr. Wortman's eldest daughter, Mary Ella, was united in the holy bonds to Hugh B. Cuthbert, of Neepawa. The ceremony was performed at 9:30 by the Rev. W. C. Vincent, pastor of Logan Avenue Baptist church. Mr. Jas. Vance, contractor, of Neepawa, assisted the groom, and Miss. Georgina Wortman, sister of the bride, acted as bridesmaid. The bride was tastely attired in a bluette gown with cream triminings. The esteem in which the bride was held was shown by the number of costly gifts of which she was the recipient."
(Note from D.W. Wortman, personal correspondence) -- Georgina Wortman is properly "Georgia" Wortman; also my great grandfather was W.W.W. Wortman. As well, I note Ella lists herself as "presbyterian" in one of the censuses, presumably reflecting Hugh's religion. 35 Gunnell Street is today's 255 Gunnell Street. The Wortmans were the first to live in that house, built in 1895. One of the Henderson's Directories lists the address as 25 Gunnell Street.
