- In 1871 Samuel was living with his sister Jane and her family in Alston, Cumberland, England. In 1881 he was living with his sister Elizabeth and her family and working as a sailor. Samuel married Jane Ann Walton in Bellingham, Wark on Tyne. She was living at Houxty Bankhead, which is where Annie Dawson's husband, Luke Bell, was from. Luke Bell may have been a witness at their wedding (the signature is hard to read - Walsh). Samuel was living at Copheaton at the time. In 1891 Samuel was living in his own house with his own family just three houses away from his sister Jane in Stanhope, Durham, England. In 1901 he was living at Houxty Bankhead, Bellingham, Hexham, Northumberland, England, with his wife and daughter, Louisa. A niece, Jane Dawson, age 17, is also found with them. She is believed to be the daughter of Joseph Hetherington Dawson. Samuel was working as a tailor and farmer. It should be noted that this is the same farm that his brother-in-law, Luke Bell, had formerly lived and worked at. Samuel was also living next to the Lee Hall farm, residence of John Usher Bell.
