  "Alan Dapifer" is found as a witness in 1086 to a charter relating to Mezuoit, a cell near Dol of the Abbey of Saint-Florent de Saumur. ("Dapifer" is Latin for "Seneschal.") Alan's father is unknown. It is claimed that Alan's ancestors, being Senechals of Dol, were descended from a younger earlier branch of the Counts of Dol. This claim is plausible but not proven.
