- In 1851, at age 17, Hugh Gillespie was residing at L-2d House in the Divisions in Deanston, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland, with his parents and siblings. He was employed as an apprentice mechanic.
On 2 Jan 1860, at age 28. Hugh Gillespie, a dockyard engineer, residing in Portsea, Portsmouth, England, son of John Gillespie, a mechanic at the Deanston Works, and Catherine McLaren (deceased), married in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland, to Janet Shade, age 22, a dress maker, residing in Deanston, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland, daughter of John Shade, a presser at Deanston Works, and Janet Wardrop.
In 1861, at age 28, Hugh Gillespie was residing in Portsea, Hampshire, England, with his wife and newborn son. He was employed as a steam engine fitter.
On 30 Jun 1868, Hugh's wife, Janet, was admitted to the Gartnavel Royal Asylum, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
In 1871, at age 38, Hugh Gillespie was residing at 668 Gallowgate in Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, without his wife, but with his two daughters. They were residing with his wife's parents John and Helen Shade. Hugh was employed as an Engineer In G Shop. Hugh's wife, Janet, age 32, was residing at Springburn Poorhouse, Lunatic Asylum, and Fever Hospital, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, where she was an inmate and working as a Warehouse Worker.
In 1881, at age 48, Hugh Gillespie was residing in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland with his father, John, and his half-sister, Elizabeth. His children from his first marriage were not with him. His wife, Janet is not found in 1881.
In 1889, Hugh Gillespie was employed as a sewing machine mechanic, when his daughter Helen got married.
Hugh died a year later in 1890.
