• Notes

  1851 and 1861 census show conflicting ages for both John and Rachel, but their birth place is recorded as England in all cases. Rachel's name is recorded in several different versions including Fryer and Fraies which sound more German or French than English. Also their son, Alfrid, uses a German spelling. It's possible that they lied about being English in order to hide their German heritage, which seems to have been common.
