- Ludovick is a rare and unusual name to encounter in the Gaelic Highlands of Buchanan parish. It is likely that he was named after Ludovic Stewart, 2nd Duke of Lennox and 1st Duke of Richmond (1572-1624), who was feudal superior in the lands of the Lennox in Stirlingshire and Dunbartonshire. (He was second cousin of James VI & I, son of Esme Stewart, 1st Duke of Lennox, 1st cousin of Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley, heir apparent of Matthew Stewart, 4th Earl of Lennox, who was son of John Stewart, 5th Seigneur d'Aubigny, who was son of John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Lennox.)
The origin of Ludovick Stewart in Inveruglas is unknown. He could be from the Stewarts of Balquhidder or the Stewarts of Appin or a Stewart clan from the south.
Ludovick Stewart married on 27 Dec 1658 in Buchanan parish, Stirlingshire, Scotland to Catherine Stewart. They had three documented children in Inveruglas on the west side of Loch Lomond. Inveruglas is in Dunbartonshire but the children were baptised in Buchanan, Stirlingshire, Scotland. No further children have been found for them in Stirlingshire or Dunbartonshire.
Ludovick Stewart is believed to have married secondly about 1680 to Barbara Courtney with whom he had two more daughters. It's possible this could be a different Ludovick, but given the rarity of the name Ludovick, it's more likely to be a second marriage for the same Ludovick.
