  Magnus succeeded as King of the Isles, although history does not record his predecessor. Nor are any of the earlier Kings of the Isles known. They were Norwegian Jarls, but their identities are not recorded. In 973 Magnus formed an aliance with Kenneth III, King of Scots and Malcolm, King of the Cumbri for mutual protection. He was succeeded by Gille Domnan, but it is not known if they were father and son, or related at all.
