The Angus Family in Skerton and Castle, Lancaster, Lancashire, England

And their descendants in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

Our Angus family lived in the Skerton district and, later, the Castle district of Lancaster, Lancashire, England, where they lived through the 19th century and into the early 20th century when they immigrated to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Many of our Anguses worked as sawyers or carpenters. The trade was passed from father to son even into the New World.

This branch of the family originates with William Angus in Bulk, who was born in 1773 in nearby Quarmore, Lancashire, England, and who later moved into the growing town of Lancaster. The ancestors of William Angus in Bulk can be found on the Angus Family in Lancaster, Lancashire, England page:

William Angus/Angious was born in 1773 and was baptized on 30 May 1773 in St Mary, Lancaster, Lancashire, England as the son of Thomas Angus in Quarmore (Quernmore).

On 6 Apr 1807, William Angious of Bulk, a husbandman*, and Ann Wheeler of Skerton, a widow, were married in St. Mary’s, Lancaster, Lancashire, England. As Ann is listed as a widow, it is presumed that Wheeler was her married name. Her birth surname is unknown. The marriage was witnessed by Thomas Braithwaite and Betty ~yers (Dwyers, Myers?). The bride, groom and witnesses all signed with their marks.

[*A husbandman was someone who looked after animals, but in Northern England the term was also used to refer to a tenant farmer.]

(The fact that Ann was a widow would suggest she likely had children from her first marriage. This might explain why William and Ann only had two (known) children together.)

Later that same year, on 31 Dec 1807, William Angious was a witness to his brother John’s marriage and was employed as a husbandman at the time.

William and Ann had two known sons, Thomas and James. It’s possible that they may have had more for whom records have not been found. It’s possible that Ann may have died after having only two children. If so, it’s possible that William may have remarried and had more children with another wife that we don’t know about.

William Angus died in 1840 at age 67 prior to the first census in 1841 so we are unable to glean further information about him from the census.

James Angus/Angious was born 5 Nov 1810 in Skerton, Lancashire, England and baptised on 25 Nov 1810 in St. Mary’s parish, Lancaster, Lancashire, England, as the son of William and Ann Angus.

On 21 Sept 1828, at age 17, James Angious, a wheelwright, married in Cockerham, Lancashire, England, to 22-year-old Jane Preston. Both of the parish of St. Michael, Cockerham. Jane signed with her mark. The marriage was witnessed by Thomas Wright and WIlliam Angious who also signed with his mark. Cockerham is located about 10km south of Lancaster, almost midway to Preston.

In 1841, at age 30, James Angus was residing in Lancaster, Lancashire, England, with his wife and children, Ann, John, Jane, William, and Sarah. He was employed as a sawyer.

In 1851, at age 40, James Angus was residing at 4 Palisades in Castle Ward, Lancaster, Lancashire, England, with his wife and children, John, Jane, William and newborn James. Absent are 10-year-old Sarah and 8-year-old Edward. James was employed as a sawyer (carpenter). He gives his birth place as Skerton.

In 1861, at age 50, James Angus was residing at 127 Ovenhouse Road in Castle Ward, Lancaster, Lancashire, England, with his wife and son, James Jr. James Sr was employed as a sawyer (carpenter). Also residing with them was their 5-year-old granddaughter, Mary J. Sharples, born in Preston, Lancashire, England. The family was residing next-door to the family of George Bland, who may be related to the Bland family who later married James’ great-grandson.

In 1871, at age 60, James Angus was residing at 11 Bridge Lane in Castle Ward, Lancaster, Lancashire, England, with his wife, Jane, and their 15-year-old granddaughter, Mary J Sharples.

James died in 1877. His widow, Jane, is found in 1881, at age 74, residing in a workhouse in Lancaster, Lancashire, England, as a cotton weaver and pauper. She died six years later.

James Angus and Jane Preston had the following children:

1. Anne Angus/Angious, b. 7 Aug 1829, Lancaster, Lancashire, England, d. Jun 1896, Lancashire, England (Age 66 years)

Ann Angious was born 7 Aug 1829 and baptized 21 Aug 1829 in Lancaster, Lancashire, England. Her parents names were recorded as William and Jane Angious. Her father was a wheelwright. It’s not known if this vicar mistakenly recorded her father’s name as William instead of James, or if her father’s name may have been William James, or if there might be a previously undiscovered William Angus, possibly brother to James who had a daughter who was raised by James. As Ann is found in census records with the family of James and Jane Angus, and her marriage record shows her father as James, then it is presumed that the baptismal entry is in error on her father’s name.

In 1841, at age 11, Ann Angus was residing in Lancaster, Lancashire, England with her parents and siblings.

On 20 Jan 1850, in the parish church of Lancaster, Lancashire, England, Ann Angus, of full age, daughter of James Angus, a sawyer, married to John Peel, a plasterer, son of William Peel, a labourer. Both families resided on Bridge Lane in Lancaster, Lancashire, England. Ann signed her name, while John signed with his mark.

In 1851, at age 22, Ann Peel was residing at 52 Bridge Lane in Castle Ward, Lancaster, Lancashire, England, with her new husband, John Peel. He was employed as a plasterer.

In 1861, at age 31, Ann Peel was residing at 52 Bridge Lane in Castle Ward, Lancaster, Lancashire, Engand, with her husband, John Peel, an agricultural labourer, and their children.

In 1871, at age 41, Ann Peel was residing on Bridge Lane in Castle Ward, Lancaster, Lancashire, England, with her husband, John Peel, a plasterer, and their children.

In 1881, at age 51, Ann Peel was residing at 37B Bridge Lane in Castle Ward, Lancaster, Lancashire, England, with her husband, John Peel, a plasterer, and their children. Residing next-door at 37A Bridge Lane, was 24-year-old James Peel, and his new family. He may be John’s younger brother.

In 1891, at age 61, Ann Peel was residing at 11 Bridge Lane in Castle Ward, Lancaster, Lancashire, England, with her husband, John Peel, a plasterer’s labourer, and two of their sons, Richard and James.

In 1841, at age 4, William Angus was residing in Lancaster, Lancashire, England with his parents and siblings.

In 1851, at age 13, William Angus was residing at 4 Palisades in Castle Ward, Lancaster, Lancashire, England, with his parents and siblings. He was a student.

On 13 May 1857, at age 20, William Angus, a labourer, residing at Bridge Lane in Lancaster, Lancashire, England, son of James Angus, a sawyer (carpenter), married in the parish church in Lancaster, Lancashire, England, to 20-year-old Margaret Lowther, residing at Harton Street in Lancaster, Lancashire, England, daughter of James Lowther, a collier (coal miner).

For reasons not yet understood, William’s children were born in diverse locations, including Castle Ward in Lancaster where William and his wife are found in early census records, as well as in Manchester and even Fife in Scotland.

William has not been found in 1861.

In 1871, at age 33, William Angus was residing at 37 Bridge Lane in Castle Ward, Lancaster, Lancashire, England, with his wife and children. He was employed as a painter’s labourer. They were sharing a residence with William’s sister, Ann Peel, and her family, as well as James and Catherine Hall.

In 1881 Mary Jane and her sister Rose Ann with their maternal uncle and aunt, John and Mary Ann Rigg (nee Lowther).

On 24 Oct 1885, at age 24, Mary Jane Angus, daughter of William Angus, married in Lancaster, Lancashire, England to John Huntington. He died two years later of unknown cause.

In 1891, at age 29, widowed Mary Ann Huntington, was residing at 5 Bath Mill Cottage in Park Ward, Lancaster, Lancashire, England, with her her 4-year-old son, John Huntington Jr., in the home of her maternal uncle and aunt, John and Mary Ann Rigg (nee Lowther).

In 1895, at age 30 (sic), the widowed Mary Jane Huntington (nee Angus) married in St. Ann’s parish church, Lancaster, Lancashire, England, to Edward Rawes, a cabinet maker, son of William Rawes, a joiner.

In 1901, at age 39, Mary Jane Rawes was residing at 96 Bolton Road in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, with her husband Edward Rawes, a cabinet maker, and their 2-year-old son, Edward Jr.

In 1911, at age 47, Mary Jane Rawes was residing at 181 Somerville Road in Small Heath, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, with her husband and both of her sons from both marriages. Her husband was employed as a cabinet maker. Her place of birth is given as Hulme (which is in Manchester), Lancashire, England.

Her parents were residing on Bridge Lane at the time.

In 1871, at age 8, Rose Ann Angus was residing at 5 Bath Mill Cottage in Lancaster, Lancashire, England, with her uncle and aunt, John Rigg and Mary Ann Lowther. It is unclear why she was residing with them instead of her parents.

In 1881, at age 18, Rose Ann and her sister Mary Jane were residing in Lancaster, Lancashire, England with their uncle and aunt John Rigg and Mary Ann Lowther. Sometime around June of that year, while she was residing in the home of her uncle and aunt, Rose Ann became pregnant by an unknown man.

On 7 Mar 1882, just a month after her 19th birthday, Rose Ann Angus gave birth to an illegitimate child whom she named John Rigg Angus. The father was not named in the baptism record or birth registration. It is noteworthy that she named her illegitimate son after the uncle she was living with.

In Dec 1888, at age 25, Rose Ann Angus died, unmarried, leaving her 6-year-old son orphaned. Her son died 6 years later in 1894 at the age of 12.

Meanwhile, in 1891, there is no sign of young John Rigg Angus in the census. However, Rose Ann Angus’ uncle and aunt, John Rigg and Mary Ann Lowther, who were in their sixties by this point, show a 9-year-old son named John Rigg (Jr). There is no birth registration for John Rigg (Jr). He is not found in 1901 or later census records. In fact, there is no record of his existence other than the 1891 census.

So, we have an illegitimate child, John Rigg Angus, born in 1882, named after his uncle, whose birth is recorded with only his teenage mother listed. The son does not appear in the 1891 census, yet he was still alive until 1894. Meanwhile, the mother’s uncle and aunt, in their sixties, suddenly have a son, born in 1882, exactly the same age, named John Rigg, who appears only in the 1891 census, and has no birth registration, and there is no record of him after 1894 when John Rigg Angus dies. It seems clear that John Rigg (Jr) and John Rigg Angus are the same person.

Either Rose Ann named her illegitimate child after her uncle, John Rigg, in honour of the fact that he raised her and cared for her and her child. And then, after she died, he adopted her illegitimate child as his own (in which case we would expect to see the child listed in 1891 as John Rigg Angus, stepson or adopted and we should expect to see his death registered as John Rigg, not John Rigg Angus), or, what seems tragically more likely is that uncle John Rigg is actually the father of his teenage niece’s illegitimate son. If so, then I shudder to contemplate the causes of the premature deaths of Rose Ann Angus and her illegitimate son John Rigg Angus.

One could write this situation off as an unfairly negative interpretation of coincidences, except for the fact that earlier, in 1856, John Rigg adopted and raised the illegitimate daughter of a young unwed mother, Mary Wignall, who also subsequently died. And, in 1859, 21-year-old, Mary Lucas became pregnant while residing with John Rigg, and went on to have three more children, whose births are not recorded, all while single and living with John Rigg and his wife. John Rigg and his wife never had any children of their own, but somehow three young women (including his own niece!) had a total of six illegitimate children all while residing with him. Census records also show that he had at least three other teen or young adult women living with him over the years who did not get pregnant while living with him.

His father’s name is not recorded, however, it would seem likely that his father’s name was John Rigg.

John Rigg Angus’ mother, Rose Ann Angus, was raised by her uncle, John Rigg. When Rose Ann Angus died young, at age 25, it appears that uncle John Rigg took John Rigg Angus as his own son, and declared him to be so in 1891 census where he was named John Rigg. John Rigg Angus died three years later at the age of 12.

Rose Ann Angus was born in 1863 in Castle Ward, Lancaster, Lancashire, England.

His father’s name is not recorded, however, it would seem likely that his father’s name was John Rigg.John Rigg Angus’ mother, Rose Ann Angus, was raised by her uncle, John Rigg. When Rose Ann Angus died young, at age 25, it appears that uncle John Rigg took John Rigg Angus as his own son, and declared him to be so in 1891 census where he was named John Rigg. John Rigg Angus died three years later at the age of 12.

Elizabeth, daughter of William Angus and Margaret Lowther, born 1869 in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland.

Her sister, Mary Jane Angus married John Huntington of Over Wyresdale. This suggests that William Angus may have kept in touch with his family’s earlier roots.

James Dowbiggin Angus is memorialized in Scotland on a memorial for Scots Serving in Brigade of Guards and English Regiments. He served in the The King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, Latterly 26260 2nd Bn the Royal Scots. Why? Possibly because he knew it was his family’s historical regiment. That’s the kind of thing that would have been passed down. And the Royal Scots fought for the government in 1715 and 1745.
