1402 | Baptism date not given in OPR. David is described in Stewarts of the South as a son "under age". In 1851 David has his sister Catherine (b 1803 in Callander) and his nephew Walter (b 1834 in Kilmadock, son of Archibald) residing with him and his family. It would appear that David followed in his brother Archibald's footsteps initially and was employed in 1851 as a Grocer in Kinnoul. However in 1861 he had returned to his family roots of farming and was maintaining a farm in Mains of Huntingtower, Tibbermore, Perthshire, Scotland and employing 5 men. Transcript of the Perthshire Courier Tuesday, October 2, 1866 Death of David Stuart, Esq. It is with sincere regret we have to announce the death of this respected gentleman, which took place yesterday afternoon, at Mains of Huntingtower. Mr. Stuart has been cut down in the prime of life, and, til seized by his fatal illness, of health and vigor. He had been ailing for some months, and was at last carried off by an abscess of the lung. Mr. Stuart settled in Perth as a merchant in 1836, where he conducted a most successful and prosperous business for twenty years. He retired from business in 1856 to enjoy the fruits of his industry, integrity, and uprightness. He was elected a member of Town Council in 1845, and continued a member, in various capacities, we believe, continuously, til his removal to the country in 1858. He was early chosen a Magistrate, filling, through a series of years, the chairs of third, second, and first bailie. In 1856 he was chosen Dean of Guild to which honourable office he was, according to custom, twice re-elected. In 1813 Mr. Stuart, unobtrusively, but determinedly, cast in his lot with the Free Church. He attached himself to the Free Middle Congregation, and was, at the first election, chosen an elder. Politically and ecclesiastically he was thoroughly liberal. Nor was his liberality confined to sentiment. He was large-hearted and open-handed. His contributions, to whatever good object he felt it his duty to contribute, were free and unstinted. We believe appeals were seldom made to him in vain; and we know that many appeals were bountifully responded to. On the very eve of publication it is impossible for us to enlarge. Suffice it to say that, for upwards of twenty years the deceased gentleman was one of our most prominent and respected citizens, taking an active part in all public matters, whether religious, ecclesiastical, municipal, or charitable; and that after returning to the country, he continued to feel the deepest interest in all that pertained to the prosperity of the city. As an agriculturist he was distinguished by all those qualities which commended him so highly to this community as a merchant and a citizen. Perthshire Constitutional and Journal, Thursday Oct 4, 1866 At Mains of Huntingtower, on the 1st inst., David Stuart, Esq., aged 56, Friends will please accept of this intimation. Perthshire Constitutional and Journal, Thursday Oct 4, 1866 Death of ex-Dean of Guild Stuart.-- Our obituary today contains the notice of the death of David Stuart, Esq., for many years an enterpresing merchant in Perth. The sad event took place at Mains of Huntingtower on Monday, the cause of death being abcess of the lungs. In the year 836 Mr Stuart commenced business as a merchant in Perth, and, after a successful career retired from business in 1856. He was for many years a member fo the Town Council, and was on various occasions appointed to the Magistracy -- he having by turns occupied the chairs of First, Second, and Third Bailie. In 1856, he was elected Lord-Dean of Guild, and in that capacity he gave the highest satisfaction to the Guild brethren. In private, as in public life, Mr Stuart was highly respected, and his loss will be mourned by many friends. | Stuart, David Henry in Mains of Huntingtower (I15628)

In 1823, John was employed as an innkeeper in Newton at the time of the birth of his first child, William. In 1824, John was employed as an publican (pub owner) in Newton at the time of the birth of his son, Thomas. 1416 | Baptism: 23 Sep 1849 St Mary, Lancaster, Lancashire, England Thomas Dobson - [Child] of John Dobson & Judith Born: 29 Aug 1849 Abode: Lancaster Occupation: Labourer Baptised by: A. Christopherson, Curate Register: Baptisms 1845 - 1852, Page 160, Entry 1277 This is a highly suspicious birth. There is no other couple named John and Judith Dobson in the parish register other than this couple, but they would have been in their 50s when Thomas was born. Also, they already had an earlier son named Thomas who was still alive in the 1851 census. This child, Thomas, is found in 1851 residing with his adult niece, Isabella Dobson (nee Harrison) widow of William Dobson. Either this was a very late birth and the child was being raised by his adult widowed niece, or she was actually the mother and her former husband's parents registered the baby as theirs as he would have been illegitimate otherwise. | Dobson, Thomas (I24179)

1436 | Basil Dean was born in Newbury, England and graduated from the University of London in Journalism where he received an award for “Best Student of The Year” in 1936. He came to Canada on a work experience or internship and spent several months at each of several Southam Publishing newspapers including the Montreal Gazette, Hamilton Spectator, Edmonton Journal and Calgary Herald. It was while working at Hamilton Spectator that he met his future wife, Florence Jean Brown, who was a reporter. While at the Edmonton Journal he spent some time covering the “police beat”. When the old police station was torn down in the ’70s, they discovered a desk with “Basil Dean, the only gentleman in Alberta” scribed inside one of the drawers. Basil fell in love with Canada and Florence Jean Brown and decided to emigrate. He was the only male Dean to ever leave Newbury and was the oldest of five children followed by John, Betty, Josie and Tony. John took over the family grocery store when their father died in the mid-‘1950s; John died circa 1965. Betty died a few years ago and Josie a number of years ago. Tony died just before Christmas 1995. Basil died just before Christmas, 1967. After he decided to make Canada home, he covered King George VI’s Canadian tour among other things and returned to Hamilton - no doubt largely due to his future wife. His future father-in-law, Hamilton Police Chief, Tom Brown, was in charge of security for the same royal visit. Basil joined the RCAF and received orders to report for duty on Boxing Day, 1941. A hasty marriage was in order. Jean’s father, Tom Brown, arranged the wedding, apparently using his connections to circumvent waiting periods, etc. and managed to scrounge a minister on Christmas Day. Basil married Jean in the Brown family home in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, on Christmas Day, 1941. During the war Basil was posted to several locations in Canada including Edmonton so Jean went with him. He was a media liaison officer and while in Edmonton covered the construction of the Alaska Highway. He eventually rose to rank of Squadron Leader and spent several years overseas attached to the RCAF’s Overseas HQ in England. Jean remained in Hamilton when he was oversease and continued working as a reporter. At the end of the war he was stationed in England. Jean travelled there in 1945 after VE Day, where they remained for a time. While in England, in 1946, Jean gave birth to her first child. Basil covered the Winter Olympics in Switzerland in 1948. When he & Jean were invited to some sort of gala she didn’t have anything suitable to wear; Barbara Ann Scott, the Canadian Gold Medalist, loaned her a gown. Basil, and his young family, moved back to Canada in the late spring of 1949 and Basil became a reporter at the Calgary Herald and in 1955 became its publisher. He was made Publisher of the Edmonton Journal in January, 1962. Basil was made an Honourary Chief at Hobbema, AB (now Maskawacis First Nation) around 1959-60 for the stance that the Calgary Herald took against the federal government’s planned changes to the Indian Act and which they were forced to abandon. | Dean, Basil (I4785)
