That the said John Stewart was married to Isobel Macfarlane a daughter of Hugh Macfarlane of Calliechra at Loch Katrine in the Parish of Callander." (Glasingall trial manuscript.)

3007 Her name is miss-transcribed as "Susie" in 1881 on IGI. Hunt, Louisa Ellen (I8030)

3008 Her parents forbid her to marry Robert Roy Stewart because she was only 17 and he was 26 when they started dating, so they eloped when she was 18. Her husband died in 1921. In 1929, she married secondly in Dunnville, Norfolk, Ontario, Canada to William Stelle of New Brunswick, New Jersey, USA. They moved with her two children firstly to his hometown where they had two children of their own. They later moved to Martinsburg, West Virginia, USA. Blackman, Consuelo Viola (I1069)

3009 Her place of birth might be a mistake here, as in 1911 she is living with her family on their farm in Saltfleet. Furler, Myrtle Irene (I6471)

3010 Her son, Reginald, sold the family farm to the Provincial Government. It is now Bronte Creek Provincial Park. Bridgman, Mabel Lizella (I1572)

3014 Here lies in hope of a blessed resurrection the remains of Duncan Fergusson in Laggan of Strathire, who died in the year 1784, aged 44 years. Being of the anchant family of Artandamh. This stone was erected by Peter Fergusson his son. "How loved, how valued Once, avails thee not. By whom remembered, Or by whom forgot, A heap of dust alone remains of thee. It is that thou art, It is all the proud shall be." - Balquhidder Cemetery

The stone includes the following footstones:
30A Footstone F.F., E.C., 1791
30B D MF, M N. Duncan Ferguson in Laggan of Trathire, d 1784, 44, of ancient family of Artandaubh, by s Peter.

It is suggest that "D MF" refers to Duncan Ferguson and his first wife Margaret McGregor. Or it may also be "Duncan McFinlay."

The adjacent superior stone is suggested to mean "Finlay Ferguson and his wife, EC, who died in 1791." This would refer to Finlay Ferguson who married on 11 August 1759 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland to Elizabeth Carmichael.

Ferguson, Duncan (I21045)

3015 Hilda Angus never married nor had children. She lived to the age of 97. Angus, Hilda (I23132)

Dick's construction business had been hit hard by the Great Depression and he could not afford to build his youngest daughter a marital home.

Hilda lived to be 100 years old when the average lifespan for someone born at that time was 50 years.

3019 Hiram is not listed in either Ruth Brown's tree or Plumb's history of Hanover. His father, William, is shown in 1830 with only one son under the age of 5, which would be Stephen, and no other sons. Thus Hiram must have died before 1830,

3028 His descendants live in Manchester, Lancashire, Engand. Stewart, Alexander (I21789)

3029 His father is described as having married "late." His parents were residing in Florence, Italy at the time of Carlos' birth, so Florence is presumed to be the location of his brith. Carlos served as a colonel in the vatican army and was still alive in 1848.

Carlos (or Charles) is presumed to have been named after Prince Charles Edward Stuart, exiled Prince of Scots, for whom Carlos' father served as valet and majordomo for most of his life.

It is not known if Carlos married or had children.

Only Carlo survived infancy, becoming a high ranking officer of the Papal State and later General of the Roman Republic of 1849.

3033 His lands included Glenfinglas. See Stewarts of Glenfinglas for more information. Stewart, James Lord Doune (I16456)

3034 His later whereabouts are unknown. An on-line genealogy indicates that "he was probably the Nicolaus Veller buried 7 May 1708 at Guntersblum, aged 3 years." However there is no indication that his name was Johannes Nicolaus. So, for now, I will treat them as separate sons. Feller, Johannes (I5899)

3035 His mother is listed as Elizabeth Stalker. No other birth of a couple named Donald Carmichael and Elizabeth Stalker is found in Comrie. It's believed to be an error for Katherine Stalker. Carmichael, Peter in Crappich (I25903)

3041 His territory consisted of the land from Lochree to Loch ANnin, near Millingar, and from whom descend Fox (lords of the Muitir Tagan territory), MacGawley, O'Dugan, O'Mulchonry (princes of Ireland), O'Henergy, and others. Neill, Main mac (I11675)

3042 Historical evidence for the line of Cadwaladr, his son Idwal, and Idwal's son Rhodri is very sketchy. Idwal, Rhodri Molwynog ap (I8159)

3043 History does not paint a flattering portrait of Brig. Gen. George Hume-Steuart, Jr. He was a slave plantation owner and a soldier who served firstly in the United States Army, but resigned his commission at the outbreak of the Civil War in order to join the Confederate cause in support of slavery. He attained the rank of Brigadier-General (one star) and was described as an eccentric commander and a firm disciplinarian who may have bordered on cruel. His support of the Confederacy and his affection for his housekeeper caused an estrangement between George and his wife and daughters that was never healed. He was given the nickname "Maryland Steuart" in the army in order to differentiate him from a fellow Stuart officer.

George Hume Steuart, Jr. was born in 1828 in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, as the eldest of nine children raised on his father's estate of Maryland Square in Baltimore. His family were slave owners who, for three generations, had opposed the abolition of slavery. George Hume-Steuart, Jr, joined with his father in campaigning unsuccessfully for the state of Maryland to secede from the Union and join the Confederacy.

In 1858, just prior to the outbreak of the Civil War, George married Maria Hunter Kinzie. She was the granddaughter of John Kinzie, a former fur-trader and founder of the city of Chicago. Maria's family were from the North and her sympathies were with the Union. George's service in the Confederate army meant they were separated from each other for much of their early marriage. Their divided political loyalties created a rift in the marriage.

Even though Maryland did not join the South, George was welcomed into the Confederate army in the hope that he would inspire other Marylanders to follow suit. As a commander, he was a rigid disciplinarian with an obsession for keeping a clean campsite. Historians are divided as to whether his rigid discipline crossed the line to cruelty.

He served in several battles during the Civil War, including the Battle of Gettysburg. At the First Battle of Winchester, he was chastized for prevaricating to delay following an order for his cavalry to pursue the fleeing northern army. At the Battle of Cross Keys, he received a grapeshot wound to the shoulder and had to be carried off the field. He was out of action for almost a year recovering. He was said to be somewhat eccentric and upon leading a campaign into Maryland, he dismounted from his horse and did seventeen somersaults and kissed the ground to celebrate being a conqueror in his home state. His celebrations were short-lived as the Confederates were defeated at the subsequent Battle of Gettysburg. He fought in the Battle of the Wilderness with his brother, Lieutenant William James Steuart, who was fatally wounded. George was defeated at the Battle of Spotsylvania and taken prisoner. He was later released in a prisoner exchange. He was among the company of officers with General Robert E. Lee who surrendered on 9 April 1865 to General Ulysses S. Grant to end the war.

After the war, Steuart returned to his estate of Mount Stewart in South River, Anne Arundel County in Maryland to live with his wife and daughters. However he and Maria became further estranged in the 1890s by the presence of a certain housekeeper that George took in. Even his daughters became estranged from him.

George died in 1903 leaving his estate intestate. His former housekeeper challenged the settlement of the estate on the grounds that she had not been paid for her housework for ten years.
