The Angus Family in Bradford, Yorkshire, England
This page is still under construction.
The Angus family in Skerton and Castle, Lancaster, Lancashire, England descend from an earlier branch of the Angus family in Lancaster, Lancashire, England. William Angus in Bulk, Lancashire, England, the founder of this family, was born in 1773 in Quarmore (modern spelling: Quernmore), Lancashire, England, as the second son of Thomas Angus/Anghurst, Sr., and Jane Bleazard in Quernmore/Quarmore, Lancashire, England. Their family originated a generation earlier in Wyresdale, Lancashire, England, and, before that, are believed to have come from Scotland.
For information on the ancestors of this family see my Angus Family in Lancaster, Lancashire page.

William Angus and Ann Wheeler in Bulk, Lancashire, England
William Angus, in Bulk, b. Abt 30 May 1773, Quarmore, Lancashire, England , d. Abt 24 Jul 1840, Lancaster, Lancashire, England
(Age 67 years). William Angus was the second son of Thomas Angus/Anghurst, Sr., and Jane Bleazard in Quernmore/Quarmore, Lancashire, England. They can be found on my Angus Family in Lancaster, Lancashire page.
William Angus/Angious was born in 1773 and was baptized on 30 May 1773 in St Mary, Lancaster, Lancashire, England as the son of Thomas Angus in Quarmore (Quernmore).
On 6 Apr 1807, William Angious of Bulk, a husbandman*, and Ann Wheeler of Skerton, a widow, were married in St. Mary’s, Lancaster, Lancashire, England. As Ann is listed as a widow, it is presumed that Wheeler was her married name. Her birth surname is unknown. The marriage was witnessed by Thomas Braithwaite and Betty ~yers (Dwyers, Myers?). The bride, groom and witnesses all signed with their marks.
[*A husbandman was someone who looked after animals, but in Northern England the term was also used to refer to a tenant farmer.]
(The fact that Ann was a widow would suggest she likely had children from her first marriage. This might explain why William and Ann only had two (known) children together.)
Later that same year, on 31 Dec 1807, William Angious was a witness to his brother John’s marriage and was employed as a husbandman at the time.
William and Ann had two known sons, Thomas and James. It’s possible that they may have had more children for whom records have not been found. It’s possible that Ann may have died after having only two children. If so, it’s possible that William may have remarried and had more children with another wife that we don’t know about.
William Angus died in 1840 at age 67 prior to the first census in 1841, so we are unable to glean further information about him from the census.

Anne Angus, b. 7 Aug 1829, Lancaster, Lancashire, England , d. Jun 1896, Lancashire, England
(Age 66 years) .
Ann Angious was born 7 Aug 1829 and baptized 21 Aug 1829 in Lancaster, Lancashire, England. Her parents names were recorded as William and Jane Angious. Her father was a wheelwright. It’s not known if this vicar mistakenly recorded her father’s name as William instead of James, or if her father’s name may have been William James, or if there might be a previously undiscovered William Angus, possibly brother to James who had a daughter who was raised by James. As Ann is found in census records with the family of James and Jane Angus, and her marriage record shows her father as James, then it is presumed that the baptismal entry is in error on her father’s name.

(Age 71 years). John Cline Angus was the son of James Angus/Angious, Sr., and Jane Preston in Lancaster, Lancashire, England, shown above.
John Angus/Angious was born in 1831 in Lancaster, Lancashire, England.
John Angus’ grandson, Jack Angus, used to say that the Angus family originally came from Scotland and that “the Scots ran us out of Scotland”. Like his father, son, and grandson, John worked his whole life as a sawyer (carpenter).
John is shown at his birth as John Angious, son of James and Jane Angious. His marriage record indicates that his father’s name was James and that his father was also a sawyer at the time of John’s marriage.
The origin of John’s middle name “Cline” is not known. Such names are often derived from a grandparent. The surnames of three of John’s grandparents are known, but his paternal grandmother, Ann’s birth surname is not known. It is possible that her surname may have been Cline.
In 1841, at age 9, John Angus was residing at 4 Palasades, St. Mary’s District, Lancaster, Lancashire, England, with his parents and siblings.

John Angus, or “Jack” as he was known, worked in the lumber industry like his father before him. Jack was born in England and came to Canada in the early 1900s probably for better employment prospects. Jack worked as a yard foreman at the Lawson Lumber Yard on Gage Avenue in what is now downtown Hamilton. Jack and his father, Tom, built a house for Tom and Judith at 39 Gage Avenue South right next door to Lawson Lumber. After Judith’s death, Jack and Jessie moved into the house with Tom in order to take care of him. When Tom died, Jack and Jessie inherited the house, which caused a permanent rift between Jack and his siblings.
In 1901, at age 2, John Angus was residing in Skerton, Lancaster, Lancashire, England, with his parents and two siblings.
In 1911, at age 12, John Angus was residing at 77 Broadway, Skerton, Lancaster, Lancashire, England, with his parents and two siblings. He was was a student at Park School while also working as a butcher’s errand boy.

John Angus claimed that the Angus family were originally from Scotland and that “the Scots ran us out of Scotland”.
Jack and Jessie’s marriage was witnessed by Jessie’s sister, Elizabeth Duncan, and Jack’s brother, Thomas Angus.
