The Brown Family in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, USA
The accounting of this family shown below is not yet complete. New information on this family has been coming in rapidly, so I wanted to get this page posted, even though it’s incomplete. My searchable tree has a more complete record of this family.
This Brown family is a cousin branch to the Browns in Tandragee, Armagh, Ireland. Their exact origins in Ulster are uncertain. As the Tandragee Browns have recently been shown to originate it County Down then it may be that this branch originates there also. Their earlier origins seem most likely to have been as Scottish Covenanters from the Lowlands of Scotland.
This family left Ulster sometime in the late 17th or very early 18th century and settled in Pennsylvania, USA.
The following family of Browns has been shown by DNA research to share a common ancestor with the Browns from Tandragee. The as yet unidentified common ancestor likely lived sometime in the 17th century.
The earliest known ancestor of the Pennsylvania Browns is Alexander Brown (shown below) who, in the early part of the 18th century, “came from Northern Ireland and settled in Reading, Pennsylvania, USA.”
More information can be found on the Tandragee page.
Much of the early research material on this family came from research conducted by Bill Hancock and Joan Huston. (I have since lost contact with both of them. If anyone can put me in contact with them, I would be grateful.)
How the Scots-Irish Entered Colonial America Before 1746.
Before 1746 most Scots Irish immigrants to Colonial America came directly to the Great Valley Road of Virginia. There were arrivals at Boston and New York, but the largest group before 1746 came first to the port of Philadelphia. That group immediately headed to Lancaster, York, and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (See map point 27 Great Philadelphia Wagon Road) and to the mouth of the Shenandoah River with the Potomac River near Hagerstown MD. There began route Great Valley Road (a.k.a. the Irish Road, see map point 28) following the Shenandoah Valley and beyond, allowing wagon traffic as far as the current Virginia/Tennessee border town of Bristol.
Something happened in 1746 that changed that route – a wagon road (Map point 29 The Pioneer’s Road) was constructed through the Blue Ridge Mountains from Alexandria, Virginia (a Potomac seaport) to Winchester, Virginia (on the Great Valley Road of Virginia).

The Arrival of Our Browns in America
From what we know of the life of Alexander Brown, below, it appears that he followed an abbreviated version of this route after arriving in America from Ireland. He appears to have arrived in Philadelphia then followed the Shuylkill River north to Reading in Berks County. His journey is shown in blue above.
Alexander Brown (I) in Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania, USA
Alexander Brown was b. Abt 1710, Ulster, Ireland , d. UNKNOWN .
The earliest immigrant ancestor of this family was an Alexander Brown who “came from Northern Ireland and settled in Reading, Pennsylvania.” Research on the later generations allows us to estimate Alexander’s birth as circa 1710. DNA research confirms a genetic link between these Browns and a family of Browns who are found in the early 19th century residing in Knocksticken, Clough Parish, County Down, Northern Ireland and a generations later in Tandragee, Ballymore, Armagh, Ireland.
Little more is known about this Alexander Brown except that he had a son who moved to the Wyoming Valley in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, USA in 1786 and had a family there. Plumb’s 1885 History of Hanover Township, Luzerne County identifies the name of this son as Alexander Brown who married Mary Tyler. It is not known if the senior Alexander Brown had any other children, nor if he had any siblings who also came to America. It is possible that Alexander Jr’s migration to Luzerne County in 1786 may be coincident with the death of his father, this Alexander Brown.
Alexander Brown had the following child:
- Alexander Brown, b. Abt 1733, Probably Sadsbury Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA
, d. Abt Jul 1796, Kingston, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, USA
(Age ~ 63 years) . His story is presented below.

Alexander Brown, b. Abt 1733, Probably Sadsbury Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA , d. Abt Jul 1796, Kingston, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, USA
(Age ~ 63 years), although no record of their marriage has been found.
Alexander Brown was the son of another Alexander Brown who came from Northern Ireland and settled in Reading, Berks County (formerly Lancaster County), Pennsylvania, USA.
This Alexander was probably born in Berks County (though at the time it was still Lancaster County) and came with his wife and children to the Wyoming Valley in 1786 where he settled in Kingston, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, USA.
Henry Blackman Plumb’s 1885 History of Hanover Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, USA, provides a five-generation family tree for this family through Alexander’s son, William Brown. The full tree can be found here: http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~culbert/Hanover/brown.htm Plumb shows the first two generations as:
Alexander Brown was born in Lancaster* County, Pa.; emigrated to Kingston, Luzerne County, with his family; married Mary Tyler. They had: —
Alexander Brown, – went away.
John Brown, – went away.
George Brown, – went away.
James Brown, – went to Wayne County, Pa. (sic)
William Brown, m. Sarah Lewis.
Sarah Brown, m. Gideon Underwood.
Jane Brown, m. Jesse Lee.
In 1973 Ruth Brown of Scranton, since deceased, informed Linda Brown (Homer’s granddaughter and daughter of Clarence L. and Dorothy Brown) that she believed Alexander came from what is now Berks County, or that portion of Lancaster Co. now in Berks. Ruth Brown presents the family as follows:
Alexander Brown came from Northern Ireland and settled in Reading, Penna.
— Brown, his son came to Wyoming Valley in 1786
— Brown had four sons – George, Alexander, James, and William
William Brown Born 1770 married Sarah Lewis born 1778, about 1794. Their Children: William Brown Jr: born June 1, 1797
Elizabeth, died in infancy
Wm. Brown Sr. died May 1797
Sarah Lewis-Brown married Archibald Smiley in 1805. Their Children: (2) John died 8 yrs old., (1) Samuel, (3) Archibald, (4) Lewis
We interpret “– Brown” in lines 2 & 3 to refer to the same person, and thus interpret the two lines to read: “– Brown, his son, came to Wyoming Valley in 1786 [and] had four sons – George, Alexander, James, and William.” We know from Plumb that “– Brown” is this Alexander Brown who married Mary Tyler.
On 20 JAN 1794 Alexander Brown and Thomas Wigdon jointly purchased lots 25 and 26 in Braintrim Township, known as Mounts Bottom from Joel Whitcomb for 24 pounds to be paid in the form of 20 dollars in store goods on demand, 100 of barr iron, and the residue in cash. It is not known if the Alexander Brown in question is this Alexander Brown, but no other Alexander Brown has been identified.
On 27 MAR 1794 Alexander Brown of Wilkes-Barre, purchased a 3 acre house lot in Kingston for 60 pounds from Oliver Parrish. The legal description was Kingston house lot 35 bounded Northerly on the lands of Oliphalet Follet, deceased, Eastwardly on the River Susquehanna. It is not known if the Alexander Brown in question is this Alexander Brown, but no other Alexander Brown has been identified.

The full tree can be found here: http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~culbert/Hanover/brown.htm. Plumb shows William’s generation as:”William BROWN 2 (Alexander 1) was born in Lancaster County; lived in Kingston, PA; married Sarah LEWIS; died young, in Kingston. They had: William BROWN, b. 1797, d. 1880, m. (1) Amanda DILLEY, (2) Julia MOSIER”
Ruth Brown indicated that William Brown was the son of Alexander Brown who came from Northern Ireland and settled in Reading, Pennsylvania, USA. William Brown is noted as being born in 1770 and having married about 1794 to Sarah Lewis (born 1778). Their children were William Brown Jr., born June 1, 1797 and Elizabeth, who died in infancy. William Brown Sr. died May 1797, a month prior to the birth of his only surviving child. His cause of death is unknown. His widow, Sarah Lewis-Brown, then married in 1805 to Archibald Smiley. Their children: Samuel, John (died 8 yrs old), Archibald, and Lewis.
A Letter of Administration for the estate of the late Alexander Brown, dated 26 AUG 1796, who died intestate, lists Elizabeth and John Brown as Administrators and William Brown as Surety.
In 1810, William Brown was residing in Hanover, Luzerne, Pennsylvania, USA, with his stepfather’s family, Archibald Smiley. William is shown as a male between under 10 years of age.
In 1820, William Brown was residing in Hanover, Luzerne, Pennsylvania, USA, with his stepfather’s family, Archibald Smiley. William is shown as the lone male between 16-25 years of age.

William Brown, b. 1 Jun 1797, Wyoming or Kingston, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, USA , d. 29 Apr 1880, Dallas, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, USA
(Age 82 years). William Brown (II) was the son of William Brown (I) and Sarah Lewis, shown above. William married firstly Abt 1825 to Amanda Dilley, b. Abt 1800, d. Abt 1840 (Age ~ 40 years). After his first wife died, William married secondly Abt 1844 to Julia Ann (Mosier) Stivers, b. 1 Sep 1813, d. 10 Apr 1858, Prob. Nanticoke, Newport Township, Luzerne Co., PA
(Age 44 years). He had children by both wives.
William was born posthumously, a month after his father died. His mother later remarried.
In 1800, 1810 and 1820, William Brown was residing in Hanover, Luzerne, Pennsylvania, USA with his mother and step father, Archibald Smiley.
In 1830, William was residing in Hanover, Luzerne, Pennsylvania, USA, with his wife and a son and daughter, both under 5 years old, presumably Stephen and Emeline. There is also an unidentified male 50-59 years of age residing with the family. As William’s father was deceased, it seems likely it was his wife’s father.
William has not been found in the 1840 or 1850 census.
In 1860, William, age 64, was residing in Hanover, Luzerne, Pennsylvania, USA in the Wilkes Barre postal district, with no wife and with his children, Sarah, Anderson, Hendrick, George, and Lewis. He was living two houses away from Henry Plumb, author of the 1885 History of Hanover Township.
William probably died at the home of his son Hendrick in Nanticoke. The death certificate of his son Lewis C. Brown apparently states that William was born in Wyoming, Pennsylvania, USA. This statement was given by Hendrick Brown when completing the death certificate for his brother Lewis C. Brown. The Plumb History of Hanover states that William was born in Kingston, Pennsylvania, USA. Perhaps both are correct, as Kingston is in the Wyoming Valley and was the center of population at the time that William was born. However, his daughter Sarah’s death certificate indicates that William was born in Connecticut. This statement was given by her son Loren E Dunn, and is two generations removed so is less reliable.

According to Joan Huston: “James was the first Protonotary (principal clerk notary or probate officer) for Wyoming County. Buried in the Old Brick Cemetery, Eaton Township, Wyoming County, Pennsylvania. according to the Wyoming County Historical Society. According to Alverta Brown Martin’s book “Pacific Northwest Grandfathers”, he was buried in the Harding Cemetery.” The former is correct.
