William Stewart in Hamilton, Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada
William Stewart was the youngest of 11 children who left their ancient homeland of Scotland in 1834 and came to Canada. William was barely ten years old at the time. The family eventually arrived in Hamilton where the older siblings established their own homes. The younger siblings, including William, went with their mother north to Puslinch Township in Wellington County where they established a farm. After his mother died, William was raised by his older sister and brother, Catharine and Peter Stewart.
William worked primarily as a farm labourer and general labourer. He married and had a very large family of his own while living initially on the family farm in Puslinch, but eventually moving back to the growing city of Hamilton where his descendants lived, some of whom moved further abroad.
This is their story.
Ancestors from a Royal Clan
William Stewart was the youngest of eleven children and the fifth son born to Robert Stewart in Morell and his wife, Catharine McNaughtan. William Stewart was descended from the family of the Stewarts of Dalveich, who were, in turn, an illegitimate cadet branch of the Stewarts of Ardvorlich, who were the senior family of Clan Stewart of Balquhidder, a Royal Stewart clan.
They were Jacobites, loyal to the Stewart line of kings, with a notorious history in the Highlands of southwest Perthshire, Scotland. They were descended from King Robert II of Scots, the first Stewart king in Scotland. That also makes them descendants of King Robert The Bruce, the hero king of Scotland, who was grandfather to King Robert II.
Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada
The city of Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada in 1859.
When William Stewart arrived in Hamilton in 1834 as a ten-year-old boy, it was just a village of 1000 people in an area known as the District of Gore.
William’s family lost all of their possessions at the bottom of a river on their journey to Hamilton. They arrived with just the clothes on their backs and presented themselves at the home of their distant cousin, Sir Allan Napier MacNab. MacNab was in the process of building his luxurious estate home which he would name Dundurn Castle, after the farm of Dundurn just east of the village of St. Fillans in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland, where our Stewarts came from. Sir Allan MacNab provided housing for the elder Stewart children, while the younger siblings and their widowed mother moved north to establish a family farm in Puslinch, Wellington, Ontario, Canada.
William grew up on the family farm in Puslinch, but in his later adult years he returned to the city of Hamilton to raise his own children.
Hamilton was granted city status in 1846. It grew to become a major port city and industrial city, with the steel industry dominating. Today it has a population of 776,000 (2022).
William Stewart in Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada
William Stewart, b. Abt 22 Nov 1824, Morell, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. 15 Feb 1892, Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada (Age ~ 67 years). William was the youngest son of Robert Stewart in Morell. William married abt 1850 in Puslinch, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada to Agnes McLean, b. 1829, Scotland , d. 15 Mar 1889, Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada (Age 60 years).
William Stewart was born in 1824 in the clachan of Morell, Easter Glentarken, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. The Comrie OPR records his place of birth as “Moril.” He was the youngest of Robert Stewart and Catharine McNaughtan’s eleven children. His father’s exact date of death is not known, but is estimated to be around 1830, meaning William was probably around 5 years old when his father died. Economic conditions after his father’s death made the prospect of moving to the New World more appealing than remaining in Scotland.
William was ten years old when his family arrived in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, in 1834. Their full story is already detailed in the notes for William’s mother, Catharine McNaughtan, and William’s brothers, Robert, Duncan, and Peter Stewart. The reader should refer to those notes for information on the early life of this family.
William grew up on the Stewart family farm in Puslinch township, Wellington County, Ontario. William’s father, Robert, died when William was a very young boy back in Scotland, so William was initially raised by his widowed mother and his older siblings on the Stewart farm. When William was a teenager his mother, along with his older brother Robert and Robert’s wife Mary, all died probably of smallpox. William’s next oldest brother, Peter, then became the oldest responsible adult on the Stewart farm. William continued to live with his brother Peter and sister Catharine even long after he married Agnes McLean and they began having children.
In 1851, William, age 27, was residing in the village of Galt, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada with his 21 year old wife, Agnes, and their 1 year old son, Robert. William was employed as a brewer.
Given that William and Agnes were in Galt in 1851 with their 1 year old child, their elusive marriage may have taken place in Galt.
In 1861, William was residing in Puslinch, Wellington, Ontario, Canada with his wife and young children (excluding Robert). They were living in a frame house which appears to have been located on the farm of Kenneth McKenzie. William was recorded as a labourer. It appears he was working on Mr. McKenzie’s farm. William and Agnes’ 9 year old son, Robert Stewart, was living with William’s siblings, Peter and Catherine, on the Stewart farm in Puslinch.
In 1871, William was residing in Puslinch, Wellington, Ontario, Canada, with his wife and young family. He was employed as a labourer. William’s son, Edward, was residing on William’s brother Peter’s farm in Puslinch.
By 1872, William and his young family had moved to the city of Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada where their son, Archibald, was born that year.
In 1881, William Stewart was residing in Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada with his wife and children. William’s occupation is listed simply as “labourer”.
The family of William Stewart is buried nearby to the family of his nephew Hugh Stewart in Hamilton Cemetery.

4. Edward Stewart, b. 20 Jan 1858, Puslinch, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada, d. Between 1937 and 1941, Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada (Age 78 years)
Edward Stewart, b. 20 Jan 1858, Puslinch, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada , d. Between 1937 and 1941, Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada (Age 78 years). Edward married on 3 Jun 1886 in Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada to Louisa Maria Rowes, b. Apr 1862, Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada , d. 28 May 1906, Teeswater, Bruce County, Ontario, Canada (Age ~ 44 years).
In 1861, Edward was residing in Puslinch, Wellington, Ontario, Canada, as a young boy with his parents and siblings. Sadly, his life would be beset by tragedy after tragedy. He would be predeceased by his wife and at least half of his six children. It is believed that none of his children had children of their own. There are no known descendants of Edward.
In 1871, Edward was residing on the Stewart family farm in Puslinch, Wellington, Ontario, Canada as a teenager with his uncle Peter.
In 1881, Edward was residing in Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada with his parents and siblings. He was employed as a grocer. His cousins, Robert and Hugh, owned a grocery store in Hamilton at the time. It’s possible that Edward may have worked in his cousins’ store.
In 1886, Edward married Maria Louisa Rolls. The 1871 census records her family as “Abrahamic” religion and in other census records as “Brethren.” In 1871 her family were living three houses away from the family of Jemima Work, future wife of Edward’s older brother Norman.
In 1891, Edward was residing in Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada with his wife and children. He was employed as an express driver.
In 1901, Edward is missing from the census. His wife and children are found residing in Ward 1, Hamilton City, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada at the top of page 20 of the census. His wife, Louisa, is listed as “wife” not “head” in relationship to the head of the household. This would suggest the family’s entry begins in the previous page. However, page 1 is missing from the online digital copy. I presume at the bottom of page 19 we will find Edward listed there as the last entry.
Edward and Louisa’s son Frank was born in Teeswater, Bruce, Ontario, Canada later that year, suggesting the family moved to Teeswater sometime in 1901.
In 1906, Edward’s wife, Louisa, died in Teeswater, leaving him with a family of young children to raise on his own. He never remarried. Their eldest daughter Almeda was 18 at the time and presumably stepped in to help raise the children. She never married and was never employed outside the house. She remained living with her father for the rest of her life.
In 1911, Edward was residing in Teeswater, Bruce, Ontario, Canada with his children. He was employed as an expressman on the railroad.
in 1921, Edward was residing in Teeswater, Culross Township, Bruce, Ontario, Canada with some of their children. He was employed as an express messenger.
In 1930, his youngest son, Frank, married just a few years, died of accidental asphyxiation from car exhaust fumes.
In 1936, his daughter Jennie, also married just a few years, died prematurely. Her cause of death is unknown.
In 1937, Edward was residing at 220 Hunter Street with daughter Alma and son Samuel at the time of Samuel’s tragic death, which may have been by suicide. Edward was the informant on Samuel’s death. Four years later, when Edward’s son Charles died by suicide under similar circumstances, Edward’s daughter Almeda was the informant, suggesting that Edward had died in the intervening years. No record has been found of Edward’s death or burial.
Edward and Louisa had the following children:
-
- Charles Edward Stewart, b. 15 Mar 1886, Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada , d. 10 Feb 1941, Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada (Age 54 years). Charled married on 16 Sep 1908 in Rainy River District, Rainy River, Ontario, Canada to Edna Alberta Winkler, b. 1885, Bentinck, Grey County, Ontario, Canada , d. 28 May 1936, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada (Age 51 years).Charles Edward Stewart was born in 1886 in Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada. In 1901, Charles was residing in Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada with his parents and siblings. He was employed as a Canadian Pacific telegraph operator. Later that year, Charles’ parents moved to Teeswater, Bruce, Ontario, Canada. It is presumed that Charles moved with them as he would only have been 15 years old at the time.In 1906 Charles mother died prematurely leaving his widowed father with a family of young children to raise. Charles would have been 20 years old at the time.
Two years later, in 1908, Charles was in Rainy River, Ontario, Canada (in far western Ontario, about 40 km from the Manitoba border), where he married Edna Winkler. She was born in Bentinck, Bruce, Ontario, Canada (about 30 km east of Teeswater and south of Owen Sound), where her father was a hotel keeper and later a postmaster, but her family was residing Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada by 1906. This would suggest that Charles and Edna met in Bruce County and that he likely followed her family to Winnipeg. The fact that he married so soon after, and so far away from, his mother’s death is noteworthy.
In 1911, Charles and Edna were residing in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada where he was employed as a telegraph operator for a telephone exchange. He was working 60 hours per week and earning $0.35 per hour. His earnings the previous year were $1260 for the year(approximately $32,000 in 2022 value), putting them just barely above the poverty line. They were living with her mother at the time.
In 1916, Charles was residing in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada with his wife, Edna. He was employed as a telegraph operator in a telegraph office. On 31 Aug 1916, Charles arrived in Plymouth, England, for his military service in WWI. His younger brother Edward served at the same time. It’s not known if they served together.
After Charles returned from the war there is no record of him until the time of his wife’s untimely death. There is no record that they ever had children.
Charles and Edna have not been found in 1921.
In 1930, he would have received word that his baby brother Frank died from accidental asphyxiation.
Sometime around 1933 Charles ceased working. The reason for ceasing employment is unknown. He may have lost his job or resigned.
In 1936, Charles’ wife, Edna, died in Winnipeg at the age of 51. The cause of her death is not recorded. His youngest sister Jennie died the same year. Her cause of death is unknown.
In 1937, Charles’ younger brother Edward died under tragic circumstances which may have been suicide. Sometime between 1937-1941, Charles father, Edward, died in Hamilton. It’s not known if Charles was back in Hamilton and living with his father at the time or whether he was still in Winnipeg.
He lost his mother when he was just 20. Shortly thereafter he was off to war with his younger brother. Who knows what trauma they experience? His employment paid poorly. Then in his mid-40s, within a space of about five years, starting in 1933, he lost his job, his wife died, his baby sister died, his younger brother died (possibly from suicide), and his father died.
By 1941, Charles had returned to Hamilton and was residing at 220 Hunter Street East in Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada with his sister, Alma Stewart. On 10 Feb 1941, Charles died by suicide after leaping from the roof of Christie Street Hospital in Toronto. The report describes him as “mentally deranged” at the time. He was 54 years of age and widowed. His former occupation was recorded as telegraph operator, which he had been employed at for 30 years, but had not worked at in the past 8 years. Whether this account is exact or approximate, it would make his date of last employment around or just prior to untimely death of his wife.
- Almeda Elizabeth Stewart, b. 31 Dec 1887, Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada , d. UNKNOWN.Almeda was born in 1887 in Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada. In 1901 she moved with her family to Teeswater, Bruce, Ontario, Canada where she was a student. In 1906, when Almeda was just 18 years old, her mother died, leaving a family of young children to raise. Her father never remarried. Almeda presumably stepped in to help raise the children. She never married and was never employed outside the house. She remained living with her father for the rest of his life.
In 1911 and 1921, Almeda was residing in Teeswater, Bruce, Ontario, Canada with her father. She was not employed.
By 1935, Almeda was back in Hamilton, residing at 220 Hunter Street East with her widowed father and brother Samuel. Brother Charles joined them sometime shorly after.
In 1937, her brother Samuel died tragically, possibly by suicide.
In 1941 her brother Charles, who was living with her, died by suicide.
No record has been found for her death or burial.
- Samuel Gordon Stewart, b. 4 Nov 1893, Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada , d. 6 Mar 1937, Barton, Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada (Age 43 years)Samuel Gordon Stewart was born in 1893 in Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada. In 1901, Samuel’s family moved north to Teeswater, Bruce, Ontario, Canada when he was 7 years old. He was only 13 years old when his mother died there.
In 1911, Samuel was residing in Teeswater, Bruce, Ontario, Canada with his widowed father and siblings. He was employed as a clerk in a bank.
His military attestation papers in 1916 for WWI show him as single. Samuel and his brother Charles served at the same time in the military together.
Samuel has not been found in 1921.
In 1935, Samuel was residing at 220 Hunter Street with his father and sister Alma. Their brother Charles later lived at the same address.
Samuel Gordon Stewart died at age 43 from a “cerebral hemorrhage due to skull fracture.” He was single at the time. As his brother Charles’ official cause of death was given also as “cerebral hemorrhage due to skull fracture” following his suicide in 1941, it’s possible that Samuel’s death may also have been by suicide.
- Louisa May Stewart, b. 13 May 1895, Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada , d. UNKNOWN. She married on 24 Mar 1920 in Teeswater, Bruce, Ontario, Canada to John William Hendry, b. In 1920, she married in Teeswater to John William Hendry.
In 1921, she was residing in Teeswater, Bruce, Ontario, Canada, with her husband in the home of her father and younger siblings.
As most public records are not available later than 1921 at the time of writing this, it is not known if Louise and John had any children. Nothing further is known about them.
- Jennie Isla Stewart, b. 2 Mar 1899, Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada , d. 1936, Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada (Age 36 years) . Frank married on 25 Apr 1925 in Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada to Doris Kathleen Pearson, b. Oct 1901, Rugby, Warwickshire, England , d. UNKNOWN.Family records indicate that Frank was born in Teeswater, Bruce, Ontario, Canada, but it is registered in Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada. It is believed that Frank was born the same year that his family moved from Hamilton to Teeswater, so it’s possible the family had already moved and his pregnant mother stayed behind in order to give birth.
Frank was only five years old when his mother died prematurely.
In 1911, Frank was residing in Teeswater, Bruce, Ontario, Canada with his widowed father and some siblings.
In 1921, Frank was back in Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada residing at 222 Hunter Street East. His widowed father and siblings would later follow him to this location and are later found next door at 220 Hunter Street East. In 1921, 220 Hunter Street East was occupied by John and Louise Coverdale (ages 47 and 44 born in Ontario).
Frank married in 1925 to Doris Kathleen Pearson and then died 5 years later from accidental “cerplexycation” from automobile gas. (There is no such known word. Presumably it was asphyxiation.) They had no known children.

6. Peter Stewart, b. 3 Sep 1861, Puslinch, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada, d. 11 Jan 1945, Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada (Age 83 years)
Peter Stewart, b. 3 Sep 1861, Puslinch, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada , d. 11 Jan 1945, Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada (Age 83 years).
Peter’s birthdate is uncertain. The Baptismal Register at Duff’s Church shows his baptism as 18 Aug 1865, the same as his sister, Agnes (though different dates), which is not possible. The 1871 census gives his birth year as 1861. 1881 census shows his birth year as 1863. His death registration gives his birth as 3 Sep 1861. No civil birth registration has been found for him
It seems the Duff’s Baptismal record may be incorrect. However the 1881 census shows Agnes birthdate as 1867, so it’s possible that Peter’s is correct and Agnes’ is incorrect.
In 1871, Peter was residing in Puslinch, Wellington, Ontario, Canada with his parents and siblings. He was a student.
In 1881, Peter was residing in Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada with his parents and siblings. He was employed as a painter.
Peter has not been found in any later census records. It is possible that he may have moved to the USA until after 1921 and then returned to Hamilton.
Peter never married nor had children.
Peter’s death record indicates that he was previously employed as a piano finisher.

4. Norman Murray Stewart, b. 6 Mar 1890, Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada, d. 29 Jan 1946, Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada (Age 55 years)
Norman Murray Stewart, b. 6 Mar 1890, Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada , d. 29 Jan 1946, Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada (Age 55 years). Murray married on 14 Jun 1917 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio, USA to Anita Runge, b. Abt 1890, Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio, USA , d. 14 Jan 1975, Cleveland, Cuyahoga, USA (Age ~ 85 years).
Murray was born in 1890 in Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada.
In 1891, Norman Murray Stewart was residing in Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada as a young child with his parents and siblings.
In 1901, Norman Murray Stewart was residing in Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada as a child with his parents and siblings.
In 1911, Murray was residing in Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada, with his parents and siblings.
His niece, Margaret Stewart Ritter, says that Murray “married the daughter of a wealthy editor in Detroit, and went there to live and worked for his father-in-law. Rumor had it that his life was difficult, with a nagging wife, bossy father-in-law, and no children, although he became wealthy.” This story seems based on some truth but the details are not accurate as his marriage record indicates he married Anita Runge in Cleveland, Ohio, USA where he worked for her father in what appears to be a printing company.
In 1915, Murray immigrated to Cleveland, Ohio, USA.
In 1917, Murray was drafted to serve with the American military in WWI. He served until 1918.
In 1920, Murray was residing in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio, USA with his wife and her parents, Gustave and Alvena Runge. He was employed as an assistant manager in the Runge family business, Bingham and Runge Printer Rollers.
In 1930, Murray was residing in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio, USA with his wife and her parents, Gustave and Alvena Runge. He was employed as a treasurer in a printer rollers complany. Murray and Anita had no children.
In 1940, Murray’s wife was residing in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio, USA, with her parents but without Murray. She was still going by Anita Stewart.
In 1944, Murray is listed as living back in Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada at the time of his mother’s death.
Murray died 29 Jan 1946 Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada from coronory thrombosis. He was employed as a salesman at the time and lists Anita as his wife, though there is no indication that she was living with him as American census records show her still resising in Cleveland in 1940 and 1950. He was buried from Bates and Dodds Funeral Home, owned by his distant cousin, William James Stewart.
Anita Stewart died in 1975 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. Evidence would suggest that Murray abandoned his wife sometime between 1930-1940 and returned to Canada without her.
5. David Arkell Stewart, b. 12 Nov 1891, Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada, d. Aft 1944, Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada
David Arkell Stewart, b. 12 Nov 1891, Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada , d. Aft 1944, Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada (Age > 54 years). David married Marjorie Rae, b. Abt 1890, d. 1957 (Age ~ 67 years).
In 1901, Arkell (going by his middle name) was residing in Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada as a young boy with his parents and siblings.
In 1911, David was residing in Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada with his parents and siblings.
In 1921, David was residing in Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada with his parents and was employed as a clerk in a store.
Arkell is listed as living in Hamilton at the time of his mother’s death in 1944.
Niece Margaret Stewart Ritter records that Arkell “was an airplane pilot in WWI, was shot out of his plane in France, and fell into a tree. He escaped with just a broken leg, but was shell-shocked and very nervour and unstable for many years thereafter…. [He] was engaged to ‘the girl next door’ for fifteen years, then suddenly married another — they were happy together.” Family records indicate that his wife’s name was Marjorie Rae, but no record of their marriage has been found, nor has she been found in any census records.
