| Robert has not been confidently identified in later records however there is a promising Robert Ord born 1825 in Scotland, residing in 1875 in Buffalo, New York, USA, employed as a blacksmith, and married to 34 year old Ann. They have no children. This might explain his brother David's jaunt to the USA circa 1850. This same Robert Ord was drafted on 1 Jul 1863 for military service during the American Civil War. He was born 1825 in Scotland, residing in 1st Ward, Buffalo, New York, USA. Buffalo, New York, USA, is across the Niagara River and south from Stamford, Welland, Ontario, Canada, where Robert's brother, David, was residing. In 1872, this Robert Ord was listed in the Buffalo City Directory as a blacksmith residing at 36 Jefferson, roughly 40 km/25 miles from Stamford. This Robert is not found in any other records, including the regular census records for 1860, 1870, 1880. | Ord, Robert (I12189)

| Robert immigrated to Canada with his parents and was raised in Puslinch. According to a later Puslinch historian, Robert sold his farm for a yolk of oxen and moved to Guelph -- for which act he was later described as "a useless son". In 1861 Robert was working as a farm labourer on the farm of Robert Dunn (Robert's sister, Mary Stewart's father-in-law). Robert's future wife, Lydia Simmons, was working on the same farm. In 1871, Robert was working on his brother Hugh's farm in Puslinch. In 1881, Robert is shown as a widower living in Puslinch, and working as a labourer on his brother Hugh's farm. (Surname recorded as "Stuart".) 1901 census - He is believed to be the Robert Stewart recorded as born 10 May 1830 in Scotland, widower. |
| Robert is believed to have been born 7 Nov 1625 in Ardvorlich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland, but Robert's baptism shown here is not confirmed. The original line of Ardvorlich only lasted for two more generations beyond Robert before the male line died out. The next few successions are confusing as there are several Robert Stewarts in close succession, which has resulted in differing published accountings. For these subsequent generations we are following Gordon MacGregor's, The Red Book of Scotland. The Murder of Lord Kilpont Robert was present on 1 September 1644 after the Battle of Tippermuir/Tibbermore in the camp of James Graham, Marquis of Montrose, when his father, James Beag Stewart, 2nd of Ardvorlich, murdered John Graham, Lord Kilpont. On 1 March 1645, Robert and his father, James, along with his uncle, Duncan McRobert Stewart in Balquhidder (2nd of Glen Ogle), his uncle, Andrew Stewart in Balquhidder (6th of Gartnafuaran), and his cousin Walter Stewart in Glenfinglas (son of Andrew Stewart, 6th of Gartnafuaran) were pardoned for the act of fleeing the scene of the murder. Duncan Stewart (1739) says: "Robert of Ardvorlich married Jean Drummond, daughter to Drummond of Comrie, by whom he had 1 James, 2 Alexander. Katharine married to David Drummond of Comrie, and Janet married to James Muschet of Mill of Goody." Robert Stewart, 3rd of Ardvorlich, is mentioned in the marriage contract of his daughter, Katherine Stewart, to David Drummond, 1st of Comrie, dated 12 January, 1683, in which she is styled as his eldest daughter. David Drummond and Katherine Stewart were second-cousins, both being descended from the John Drummond, 3rd of Drummond-Erinoch. (Gordon MacGregor, The Red Book of Scotland) According to family tradition in the Laggan branch, and confirmed by the previous laird of Ardvorlich (John Stewart, 14th of Ardvorlich), Robert Stewart, 3rd of Ardvorlich "went over the hill and had a natural son by an unknown woman." This natural son was Robert Stewart in Balmeanoch whose descendants lived (literally) "over the hill" in Laggan in Strathyre. | Stewart, Robert 3rd of Ardvorlich (I18127)

Robert has not been found in any records after Stewarts of the South (ca. 1815-1820) and is presumed to have died between 1815-1841. As he was a bachelor at that time then he is presumed to have never married nor had childrena bachelor and paid rent £160." Robert has not been found in any records after 1815 and is presumed to have died between 1815-1841. As he was a bachelor in 1815, he is presumed to have never married nor had children. | Stewart, Robert in Ruinacraig (I18175)
| Robert is described in Stewarts of the South as the only son of his father who resided in Auchnahard in Glenfinglas, and describes Robert as: "Robert, late resident in Gartmore. This Robert left four sons: one a printer in Campsie who has a family of three sons under age, another a printer at Bonhill [in] Dunbartonshire who has a family of two sons, another at the Shaws near Glasgow, and another who is a soldier serving in Ireland and has a large family." There was another Robert Stewart recorded in Stewarts of the South as residing in Gartmore with four sons at the same time as this one. The other Robert Stewart was from the Edraleachdach family (Glenbuckie). Future careful research will be required to correctly distinguish between these two families. | Stewart, Robert in Gartmore (I18164)
| Robert is described in Stewarts of the South as: "late tenant of Ardvorlich, his son James Stewart is a gentleman farmer of Laggan, Strathyre, Balquidder parish, on Buchanan of Cambusmore's estate." Robert Stewart married on 18 APR 1767 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland and 30 APR 1767 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Christian McLaren The births of their children all give their mother's name as "Mary McLeran". | Stewart, Robert (I18113)
| Robert is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Robert Stewart at Auchnahard, [who had] one-eighth part of Glenfinglas. He has two sons." According to The Ardvorlich History Robert was nicknamed "Rap Bean" (which is merely the English mispronunciation of the Gaelic "Rab Ban" or "Rob Ban"). Mitchell's Monumental Inscriptions for Kilmahog Cemetery #35 reads: Mr. Robert Stewart, late tenant Glenfinglas, where his forefathers resided for many generations, b there 11.11.1741 and d there 2.5.1840. Mrs Stewart of Milton's account says of Robert (her own grandfather-in-law): "Robert S., b. 11 NOV 1747 was a son. He married Janet McKinlay.... Above Robert was father of John S. (in) Auchnahard afterwards in Milton. Robert's will contains the following information: "Robert Stewart died 2.5.1840, tenant of Auchnahard Farm, Glenfinglas, Callander. Inventory and Will, 4.3.1840. There are six joint tenants of Glenfinglas. Executors: John Stewart, eldest son, tenant in Milton, and Alexander Stewart, son, Auchnahard. His wife, Janet McKinlay and daughters: Mary, Margaret, Janet, and Katharine. Trustees appointed for children in 1813 -- Baillie Alexander Stewart, merchant in Glasgow, and Duncan Stewart, brother, in Auchnahard, and James McKinlay in Ardchullary. This part was written for him by William Stewart of Ardvorlich. 1821 Codicil, his wife, Janet McKinlay, has died. Janet and Catharine are still unmarried. Written by Robert Stewart, younger of Ardvorlich, witnessed by William Stewart of Ardvorlich. 1840 Codicil was to do with Alexander being paid for work he has done on the farm, written by Robert Stewart of Ardvorlich at Auchnahard, witnessed by Duncan Stewart in Stank. | Stewart, Robert Ban in Auchnahard (I18142)
| Robert is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Robert Stewart Cruaidh or "hard" (cruaidh means "hard"), late of Stronyire of Strathyre, Balquhidder, on the estate of Cambusmore. He left three sons. John Stewart, a cottager at Keip of Strathyre, Bn (Buchanan’s) estate, is a bachelor with his mother. Duncan Stewart, a labourer who has 2 sons, one of whom is a minor. James Stewart is a colleague at Woodend, Balquhidder. He has four sons who are minors. James is called “Earl of Kinoul”." Cambusmore was owned by Buchanan of that Ilk. Robert's marriage indicates that he was from Balquhidder parish and Christian was from Callander parish. Robert's grandchildren, were raised in Strathyre, but later moved to the Ochtertyre estate in Monzievaird, Perthshire, Scotland. ----------------------------------- Two possible families exist for Robert: Robert STEWART and Margaret FISHER in Lechdanscriddan Charles STEWART, bap. 1 MAY 1762 in ~ichscriden, begotten in fornication Robert STEWART and Catharine STEWART in Lednascriddan and Kirktown, m. 28 JAN 1775 in Balquhidder and Kilmadock, with Robert of Balquhidder parish and Catharine of Kilmadock parish. |
| Robert is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Robert Stewart, formerly [a] tenant of Auchinaird (Auchnahard) [in] Glenfinglas [and] again of Coillechat near Doune, [which is] Auchessy's property, and [the property] formerly belonged to the ancient family of Musket (Muschet). [This Robert is a] cousin to the former Robert. [He] left three sons: two in the West Indies and the third [is a] schoolmaster at Bannockburn near Stirling." Robert and his sons have not been identified in parish records. | Stewart, Robert (I18118)
| Robert is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Robert Stewart, [who is] brother to [the] foresaid James (believed to refer to James, the late tacksman of [L]orachans). [He] was [a] tacksman at Gartmore [in] Port [of] Monteith parish. [He] had four sons." Belinda suggests this Robert is the one shown in the Callander OPR as born illegitimately on 2 OCT 1709 in Callander, however I am sceptical of this birth as it appears to be a full generation too early. | Stewart, Robert in Gartmore (I18163)
| Robert is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Robert, a tenant in the estate of Sir John Murray of Lendrick, formerly the Haldane's [property], called Ruskie [in] Port [of Menteith] Parish. Rent £150. This Robert Stewart has seven sons: one of them is in the West Indies in opulent circumstances and sending home supplies to his father and [to] the rest of the family; Another son is a Major and farmer in Gartmore [in] Port [of Menteith] Parish. |
| Robert is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Robert, another of these brothers, [is] in the West Indies, in affluent circumstances and married with a large family." | Stewart, Robert (I18033)
| Robert is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Robert, has emigrated to North America and has one son." | Stewart, Robert (I18017)
| Robert is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Robert, his [Duncan's] brother, is a steady [and] respectable man and a clerk in the bank of England and has no family." Robert is mentioned in Mitchell's Monumental Inscriptions for Kilmahog parish: "48a: (next to 47) Robert STEWART, farmer (at) Wester Ardcheanacrochdan., wife Janet BLACK, son David born here 1 JUN 1769 went to England at an early age in partnership with his brother as land surveyor and land agent for many years in Great Russel Street Bloomsbury, London, died 26 MAY 1852, age 82, at (the) home of his nephew at Aucharacle near Strontian, Argyll. (Mitchell notes: see Allan, Emigrants to Canada (The Scottish Genealogist xvii 3 (1970) p. 89-90 ? the brothers, Robert and David, were active in the colonization of Prince Edward Island, Canada, and their letter dated 1834 to William Buchanan, Trossachs, is quoted [in the article.]) " In 1841 Robert was residing with his widower brother, David, in St. George Bloomsbury, London, Middlesex, England. Both were employed as surveyors. Stewarts of the South indicates that Robert had no children by as late as 1815. It is believed that Robert never married and had no children after that time either. | Stewart, Robert (I18036)
| Robert is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Robert, late tacksman of Leanachoile, dead." | Stewart, Robert (I18169)
| Robert is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Robert, the natural son [of Allan Stewart], the tacksman of Lendrich ?castle [on] Sir John McGregor-Murray's [property] was one of the most active men in the country." | Stewart, Robert (I18001)
| Robert is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Robert, the oldest [son of Robert Stewart in Blairchoill], was [a] late tacksman of Leanachan in the Lordship on Monteith, Port [of Menteith] Parish, and of Blarcrick and Drumlichuarach, in the Braes of Balquhidder, and Strathgarrie. Drumlickuarach belongs to the Earl of Moray, and was formerly the property of McGregor of Glencarnaig. This Robert had a son, named Alexander." Robert must have done well for himself as he was the son of a tenant farmer and raised himself up to be tacksman of three properties: Leanachan, Blarcrioch and South Drumlich (Druimlich-Thuarach). | Stewart, Robert (I18184)
| Robert is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Sliochd Sheun Rob 'ic Alastair Oig. Two brothers -- about three generations ago they came from Wester Invernenty in Balquhidder, formerly the property of the family of Gartnafuare...." Robert was known as "Sean Rob 'ic Alasdair Oig", which means "Old Rob, son of Young Alexander". This reference implies that Robert was born in Wester Invernenty in Balquhidder parish which property was held by the main branch of the Gartnafuaran Stewarts. He is described as coming to Duart in Glen Finglas "about three generations ago" from an entry written ca. 1815. This means he probably came to Duart somewhere around 1710-1720 which corresponds closely with the date of the death of his nephew Alexander Stewart, 2nd in Duart. It is believed that Alexander's young son either did not survive, or for some other reason did not inherit Duart. Robert would have been next in line and it is believed that this was the cause of his coming to Glen Finglas to settle in Duart. It is suggested that he is most likely the "Robert Stewart in Glenfinglas" who was one of the tutors to his brother's grandson, Alexander Stewart in Duart, in 1708 (see above). The fact that Robert may have been as old as 60 or 70 at the time of his arrival in Duart may be the source of his nickname, "Sean" ("Old"). Stewarts of the South shows four lines of male descendants from Robert, three of whom are described as "cousins". Chronology would suggest that they are most likely grandsons of Sean Rob, thus Sean Rob must have had at least three surviving sons. Robert's wife is unknown and his sons are not known for certain. They are merely inferred from the references in Stewarts of the South. | Stewart, Sean Robert mhic Alasdair Oig 3rd in Lower Duart (I18238)
| Robert is found in the 1841-1861 census records in Doune, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland. He has not been found in 1871 or 1881. In 1891 he is found with his family living in Cathcart near Glasgow working as a clerk. He died in 1905 at 6 Marchmont Terrace, Langside, Glasgow. His wife and children are found in Glasgow in 1871 and 1881 without him. Margaret was running a rooming house at the time. He left his estate to his daughter Maggie Dewar Stewart to compensate for putting her earnings as a teacher into the upkeep of the family home for many years. | Stewart, Robert (I17986)
| Robert is found in 1841 as a farm servant in Tullybannocher in Comrie parish, in 1851 in Sunnyside, Maybole, Ayshire, Scotland working as an Exise Officer and residing with his wife and daughter, in 1861 in Oakfield, Arrochar, Dumbartonshire, Scotland working as an Exise Officer and living with his family. In 1901 he is found in Arrocher and is shown as having been born in St. Fillans. | Stewart, Robert (I18015)
| Robert is found in 1841 residing with his brother Duncan in Stank. Robert has not been found in any other census records. | Stewart, Robert (I18018)
| Robert is found in 1901 residing in Rutherglen with his wife, Jessie, and 17 year old sister Christina. | Orr, Robert (I12207)
| Robert is identified in the Kilmadock OPR as being "in Annat" and sometimes even "of Annat." Robert is listed in Mitchell's Monumental Inscriptions with his father, Archibald: 283b 1732. Archibald STEWART, tenant in Annat, died 10 JUL 173[5], age 75, wife Helen LAW, also interred here, son Robert tenant in Annat, died 1776 age 70 (sic, 80), (his wife Agnes Galbraith died same year and month aged [61 or 64], daughter Margaret 16 DEC 1822, age 71 (and her husband, Duncan FERGUSON, feuar (at) Doune)). (Mitchell notes: see Kilmadock OPR - they also had a son, Archibald, bap 1747). Duncan FERGUSON, 1 JAN 1798, age 66, interred (at) Callander, their son Alexander merchant (in) Lancaster, died there 5 JAN 1815, age 56, Archibald, born JUN 1784, died age 18 months, Duncan born NOV 1786, died 1789, William merchant (in) Lancaster, died there 22 SEP 1819, age 30. (on pedestal) AS HL. McInnes Stewart, another descendant of Archibald of Landrick, offers the following testimony in the Glassingall Court of Session Papers (1849-1856): "As for the settlement of 1777 in which Archibald calls on the failure of his sister and their issue (sic), Archibald and William, the lawful sons of his uncle Robert Stewart..." From this testimony it would appear that Archibald and William were the only sons of Robert to reach adulthood and that neither had descendants. | Stewart, Robert in Annat (I17958)
